‘Chameleon Dressing’ Is A Vital Networking Tool

April 9, 2010 by Phil

A wealthy, famous person once said:”Success is when you’re able go to work wearing whatever you like!”. The way we dress is a statement and, more often than not, we wear clothes for the occasion…..a dinner suit, sports jacket or three piece suit etc. But ever thought what these ‘codes’ say to people?

I was at a networking bash last night and met a Californian lady living in the UK. I was dressed very casually, more the result of my hurried lifestyle than careful preparation! We got talking about dress codes and she said how ‘disarming’ my casual look was. It was less intimidating and, she said, more people would be likely to talk to me. Whether this is entirely the case I cannot say, however, it does prompt thought. Make sure that you are a fashion chameleon and that you dress accordingly for the event you are about to attend. All too often convention dictates that we go to a business bash ‘suited and booted’. However, whilst a suit has its place, so do chinos and sneakers……dress for success, not convention!
